Integrated Optimal Design for Hybrid Electric Powertrain of Future Aircrafts

This paper presents the integrated optimal design of powertrain a hybrid regional aircraft using multidisciplinary optimization (MDO). The sizing main components propulsion chain is performed over flight mission under various scenarios regarding energy management strategies and technological assessments. For that purpose, complete set surrogate models are into MDO process, taking account not only electrical, thermal mechanical aspects but also environmental constraints such as partial discharges in electric motors conditions. Several formulations investigated comparing local (i.e., motor mass minimization) global optimizations then fuel burn minimization at level). Results emphasize systemic couplings showing despite future progress, series architecture heavier than conventional aircraft. Nevertheless, thanks to whole optimization, potential gains related kerosene consumption can be reached, reducing footprint. “energy gains” focused on this may added with aerodynamic potentially involved more powertrain. work has been carried out frame HASTECS project Clean Sky II program which aims CO2 emissions impacts aviation sector.
